M32 Rookie Alec Cutler wins the Chicago Regatta Kicking off Month of M32 Xction in the Heart of America

Chicago (IL), USA (September 11, 2017) – Alec Cutler, a veteran Melges 24 & 32 sailor, but new to the M32, won the M32 Chicago Regatta with his Hedgehog crew. Sailing with Alec were two graduates of Team BDA who represented AC hosts Bermuda in the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup this past June along with two M32 regulars Garth Ellingham and Jimmy Williamson.

Eight boats competed in the Chicago Regatta and the racing was tight with five different teams winning races over the weekend and three teams tied for 2^nd place going into the final race. Don Wilson and his Convexity Racing Team pulled off the win in the final race while Markus Edegran’s Torrent was just two points back. Just missing out on the podium was Chicago’s Jimmy Prendergast’s Grave Digger.

The Chicago Regatta is a new event at the Chicago Yacht Club whose goal is to get boats on the water, have a great party after racing, and to raise money for a worthy cause. In the end over 100 boats competed in the five-division regatta, 400+ turned out for the party featuring Chicago Blues music, and the event raised over $100,000 for three local charities. 

Up next is the M32 North American Championship that will serve as the test event for the 2018 World Championship to be held in Chicago next fall. At least twelve boats are expected on the line for the North American’s as the class continues to develop and prove that it has the potential to be among the best one-design high performance racing platforms on the market.
